Golden Plains Holds Awards Night

            Golden Plains held their annual Awards Night in Rexford on May 5.  Members of the athletic teams, clubs, and organizations were recognized for their accomplishments during the past year.  Additional accomplishments were recognized and scholarships announced.

Among those announcements was the Kansas State High School Activities Association Citizenship Award for excellence as an exemplary young citizen, who has demonstrated a marked respect for country; assumed responsibility for improving school and community; and has show reverence for life.  This award was given to Wade Rush and Brooke Stoll.

            The  Dale Dennis Excellence in Education Award recognizes a senior for his/her citizenship, service, scholarship, and leadership.  This award is given in honor of Dale M. Dennis, Deputy Commissioner of the Kansas State Department of Education and was awarded to Ashley Stoll.  Ashley also received the Kansas Governor’s Scholar Award which honors the top one percent academically of Kansas high school seniors. 

            The KU Honors Program is designed to promote academic excellence in secondary education, to reward high school seniors for their hard work and dedication, and to support our Kansas communities.  It is given to the top 10% of a school’s senior class.  This year it was awarded to Ashley Stoll and Brooke Stoll.

Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference is a 4-day leadership seminar for high school sophomores.  The goal is to motivate and empower individuals to make a positive difference within society with a special emphasis on service to others. Memo Aragon and Jazline Manriquez were selected to attend this summer and were sponsored by the Rexford and Gem Lions Clubs.

Western Kansas Liberty League recognizes seniors who have participated in 6 athletic and 6 non-athletic activities.  Each student must also have a 3.75 GPA. Ashley Stoll and Brooke Stoll were named to the All-League Academic Team.

The Western Kansas Liberty League also hosts an Academic Contest.  Four students from each class take tests in 5 academic areas:  Math, Science, Social Studies, Science, and Writing.  Golden Plains placed 1st out of 10 schools overall in the WKLL.  This is the 3rd year in a row that Golden Plains has won the WKLL Academic Contest.  Weskan finished second, 61 points behind the Bulldogs.

The senior class placed second overall—just one point behind Weskan.  Top 8 placers included Brooke Stoll, who was 7th overall of all the seniors.  Individually she was 4th in Writing, and 8th in Social Studies.  Hannah Bange, placed 5th in Writing, 8th in Science, and 8th in Math.  Ashley Stoll, finished 3rd in Social Studies and 8th in Writing.

            The junior class placed first overall—23 points ahead of Weskan. Lauren Patmon, placed 3rd among juniors overall.  She was also 7th in Reading, 3rd in Writing, 5th in Science, and 1st in Social Studies. Wyatt McDonald, who was 4th among juniors, placed 4th in Reading, 7th in Math, 8th in Social Studies, and 3rd in Science.  Morgan Wark, who was 7th among juniors, was also 7th in Science, 8th in Social Studies, and 1st in Writing. Kassie Miller placed 7th in Writing and 4th in Math.

 

The sophomore class placed 4th overall.  Breanna Rath, who was 4th overall among sophomores, was also 4th in Science, 4th in Social Studies, 4th in Reading, and 2nd in Writing.  Sidney Taylor placed 8th overall among sophomores.  She was 8th in Science and 6th in Social Studies.

            The freshman class was also first overall.  Emma Weiner, who was first overall among freshmen, placed in all five areas.  She was 4th in Social Studies, 2nd in Math, 1st in Science, 1st in Reading, and 1st in Writing.

The President’s Academic Achievement Award-recognizes students who show outstanding educational growth, improvement, commitment, or intellectual development in their academic subject.  At Golden Plains each teacher can recognize one student in each class he/she teaches.  This year’s recipients include:
